The recently elected Executive Mayor of the City of Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality, Cllr Thapelo Amad, got down to business by visiting various areas in Region A on Tuesday, 28 March 2023. On this occasion, the Mayor and his team of MMCs visited Ivory Park North Hall, Ivory Park Swimming Pool, Kaalfontein Gravel Roads, and the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre.

Amongst MMCs accompanying the Mayor were Cllr Loyiso Lugayeni-Masuku- MMC for Corporate Shared and Services; Cllr Ernie Makhafola – MMC for Health and Social Development; Cllr Jack Sekwaila – MMC for EISD; Cllr Lubabalo Magwentshu – MMC for Community Development; Cllr Eunice Mgcina – MMC for Development Planning and Cllr Kenny Kunene – MMC for Transport

The Mayor began the day at Ivory Park Hall. Here, the team distributed 500 food parcels as part of the Senior Citizens Engagement Programme, and conducted an aerobics class for the elderly. Additionally, public health care stations were set up to offer testing and education on blood pressure and sugar.

Next on the agenda was an oversight visit to the Ivory Park Swimming Pool, which is close to completion. This recreational facility, which is said to have cost R42 million, will feature an Olympic-style swimming pool, a splash pool, a grandstand for spectators, a kiddies’ pool, and changing facilities. The project has been delayed due to poor contractor performance and the COVID-19 pandemic according to JDA.

Moving on to Kaalfontein, the Mayor and his team assisted with roadworks by paving the road surfaces with Hot Mix Asphalt. Troutfish, Parrotfish, and Basletfish streets were targeted as part of the Kaalfontein Gravel Roads Upgrade Phase 3B. The project also includes the rehabilitation of Lionfish Street, the construction of paved pedestrian sidewalks in all streets, kerbing, and stormwater construction. The Mayor also lent a hand with painting road markings at Angelfish Road.

The programme continued with an oversight visit to the Kaalfontein Multipurpose Centre. Once completed, this development will feature a new double-storey administration and office building, a community hall, a gymnasium, a pool, a library, offices, a hall, and soccer fields. The project involves seven local small to medium businesses within Ward 92, although the contractor has not yet reached their planned practical completion.

The final stop was at Yarona Shopping Centre, where stalls from various entities shared information with local residents. Speaking about the day’s events, the Mayor said that this was the launch of the “Mayor on Duty” initiative in Region A, with plans to visit different places in the City to tackle service delivery issues.
